Social Enterprise Master’s Curriculum
The Social Enterprise Master’s program requires 39 or 42 credit hours to complete, depending on the student’s prior economics background.
Core Courses (12 credit hours)
Skills Institutes (3 credit hours)
Skills institutes are 1-credit courses offered in a face-to-face online format or as part of the required in-person immersion held on American University’s campus. These course offerings are updated often to reflect current topics in the field, and they are subject to change each term. Skills institutes enable students to customize their curriculum and stay current in the field.
Economics (3–6 credit hours)
Methods and Analysis (6 credit hours)
Electives (12 credit hours)

In-person Experiences (3 credit hours)
International Immersion (optional but highly recommended) and Study Abroad.
Capstone (3 credit hours)
Taken in a student’s final semester, the capstone experience blends professional skills training with an applied policy or research project that bridges theory and practice. Learn more about the capstone here.
