2U, Our Program Partner
The American University School of International Service (SIS) has partnered with 2U Inc. to power and support the International Relations Online program. Founded in 2008 by a team of education and technology veterans, 2U enables leading colleges and universities to deliver their high-quality degree programs online to qualified students anywhere.
In addition to American University, 2U currently works with a number of leading U.S. universities to support their online graduate programs, including University of Southern California, UC Berkeley, Georgetown University, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and Northwestern University. 2U supports graduate and doctorate programs across the fields of education, social work, nursing, business, public administration, law, international affairs, public health, health care administration, and data science.
As part of our partnership, 2U provides the following services:
Students in SIS’s International Relations Online program access a virtual campus for their classes, coursework, and networking. The platform, which is available from most Internet-enabled devices, is powered by 2U. The 2U approach is best described as No Back Row®, with an online classroom unlike any other with face-to-face, live sessions. All program instruction is led by SIS’s on-campus faculty and designed with intuitive, familiar features that foster connection and collaboration.
We know many SIS students choose an online program to take advantage of the flexibility of the platform. To make the International Relations Online program as convenient as possible, 2U brings the online campus to mobile devices with apps for smartphones and tablets. These apps allow students to access coursework online and offline whenever it is convenient for them.
In preparation for live classes, students watch prerecorded content created by SIS faculty in collaboration with 2U content strategists. Together, SIS professors and the 2U team develop content that is custom made for the online program, ensuring that all content takes advantage of the latest available technologies. 2U also provides SIS with video production services, while SIS faculty authors and delivers all content.
Course content is not simply recorded lectures, but an interactive learning experience — coursework includes video case studies, discussions between professors and real students, dynamic faculty presentations, and interactive elements in which professors can see students’ progress through coursework and leave comments and feedback leading up to the live class session.
SIS works with 2U to identify and reach the most qualified candidates around the world. 2U’s marketing and recruiting efforts support our goal of finding the best students for the online program. 2U also provides an online application and application management system, which ensures a seamless process for applicants and for the SIS faculty and staff who review candidates. As with all SIS programs, applicants for the online program are reviewed by SIS faculty and all admissions decisions are made by SIS.
Student and Faculty Support
2U prepares faculty and instructors to deliver classes and course materials on the online platform so that they are best able to use the tools available in the virtual classroom. 2U also offers orientation to all online students before classes begin. Dedicated support continues throughout the program with technical support available during every live session.
