Meet Dean James Goldgeier
James Goldgeier is a leading figure in the world of public policy and Dean of the American University School of International Service (SIS). As an expert in contemporary international relations and American foreign policy, he has participated in many collaborative global projects. Currently, he is a member of the leadership team with colleagues at Duke University and the University of California, Berkeley, for the Bridging the Gap initiative, which is dedicated to strengthening the relationship between scholars of international relations and the broader foreign policy community.
Prior to his current position, Dean Goldgeier was a professor of political science and international affairs at George Washington University, and previously taught at Cornell University. In addition to his knowledge of contemporary international relations and American foreign policy, he is also an expert in U.S.-Russia relations, the European Union, transatlantic security, and NATO. This valued expertise led to former appointments that include roles at Stanford University’s Center for International Security and Cooperation; the State Department; the National Security Council; the Brookings Institution; the Council on Foreign Relations; the Library of Congress; the Woodrow Wilson Center; the Hoover Institution; the German Marshall Fund’s Transatlantic Academy; and GWU’s Institute for European, Russian and Eurasian Studies—where he was the director.
A prolific writer, he has penned more than 100 published pieces for various venues, in addition to authoring several books, which have received a number of awards and recognitions:
- Edgar S. Furniss Book Award (1995) for the best book by a first-time author in national security studies for Leadership Style and Soviet Foreign Policy: Stalin, Khrushchev, Brezhnev, Gorbachev
- Georgetown University Lepgold Book Prize (2004) for best book on international relations for Power and Purpose: U.S. Policy Toward Russia After the Cold War, co-authored with Michael McFaul
- “Best Book” recognition by Slate magazine and “Favorite Book” recognition by The Daily Beast forAmerica Between the Wars: From 11/9 to 9/11, co-authored with Derek Chollet
Dr. Goldgeier holds a PhD in Political Science from the University of California, Berkeley; an MA in Political Science from the University of California, Berkeley; and an AB in Government from Harvard University, graduating magna cum laude.
